Chinese building boom lifts Kone

China’s surging construction sector is showing no signs of slowing as urbanisation spreads inland from big coastal cities, says the chief executive of Kone, one of the world’s biggest makers of lifts and escalators.
Matti Alahuhta said Chinese government efforts to cool the country’s property market were moderating growth in hot spots such as Beijing and Shanghai but construction activity was continuing to accelerate in smaller cities and more westerly regions.
“Our order intake was very strong in China in the first quarter and we expect growth to continue throughout the year,” he told the Financial Times, highlighting affordable housing as one of the main sources of demand.
Kone’s success in China highlights the opportunity for western manufacturers to benefit from surging rates of urbanisation and infrastructure development in big emerging markets
The Finnish company won an order this month from the Chinese government to supply 178 lifts and 226 escalators to 46 railway stations across the country.
Mr Alahuhta predicted there would be more such deals in future as China’s urban population continued to expand.
According to McKinsey, the consultancy, China’s cities will have added 350m people – more than the population of the US – within the next 20 years.
By 2025, there are projected to be 219 Chinese cities with more than 1m inhabitants, compared with 35 in Europe today.
Kone is a bellwether for global construction activity because its products are found in buildings ranging from apartment blocks to shopping centres around the world.
Rapid growth in China and India has helped the company overcome the downturn in Europe and North America since the financial crisis, with Asia-Pacific sales up by a third over the past year and now accounting for 22 per cent of total revenues.
Mr Alahuhta said gradual recovery was under way in US construction but warned it remained fragile as the splurge of government stimulus spending over the past two years – much of it pumped into infrastructure projects – starts to fade out.
The outlook also remained mixed in European construction, with renewed growth in northern Europe offset by continued weakness in the crisis-hit south.
