The National Social Security Authority has closed 43 elevators in urban centres across Zimbabwe. In an interview on Monday, NSSA chief inspector Mr John Mutswatiwa said the elevators posed a threat to human life.
"At least 43 elevators nationwide were closed to date because of non-functional door sensors and poor lighting among other problems," he said.
Mr Mutswatiwa said some of the elevators were closed after it was discovered they had been using the same support ropes for more than a decade.
The authority is expected to inspect between 600 and 1 000 elevators.
NSSA administers the Factories and Works Regulations of 1976 that specify the design, installation and standard of elevators.
